riding my bike home the other nite, i found a little wounded birdy flailing about on the street. i sat and watched it for a minute before deciding to move it. after realizing it wasnt going to be able to fly off, i made it a nest in a box to spend the nite comfortably. in the morning, we drove straight away to the Second Chance Wildlife Center, about an hours drive out of DC.
what an amazing place! i had no idea that it existed. there were all sorts of animals in there! a gang of baby possums had just arrived – mommyless after a car accident. :(
i left ‘starling #1453’ in good hands and said my farewell with big hopes that it would be having a better life in Maryland than DC. however, a few days later, I called back to check its status… only to find that ‘starling #1453’ had passed. my heart ached and i closed my eyes and said goodbye.
hopefully, i offered as much comfort as possible to that little birdy in its last days. mostly, i would like to thank it for giving me the opportunity to see a new and amazing place. one that, undoubtedly, sees lots of happy endings to stories like these, as well.
wildlife sanctuaries such as these are run entirely on donations. please donate to help ensure that other little starlings like this will have access to a ‘second chance’.
